Help needed for basic operation

I've been using this tool for years in an old version. Now I've built a new PC and installed the latest version and I can't even see how to open a folder.! If I click on File-Open and navigate to the folder I want its just blank and asking me to load a "bru" file which doesn't exist. I can't find in the help file anywhere how I open a folder of my files to rename?
Please explain how I go about a very basic operation

File | Open is used to load .bru files - not to load a directory.

To load a directory, you can use the directory tree on the left, or you can Paste or type a directory location into the (oh I don't know what it's called ?) the "directory" bar (above the directory tree list), or you can browse for a directory using the "Browse" button on the right hand side of the "directory" bar.
