Rename Track Number

Bulk Rename is a fantastic program. Thanks so much for it.

Suggestion: Add a method to change MP3 track numbers. If there already is one I can't find any reference to it in the help index.

I don't think you can manipulate the metadata withing the ID tag of MP3 files using BRU

However, there are some 3rd party s/w programs to do this. I use the unsupported Tag&Rename from Softpointer (works well, but doesn't support cover art anymore). Also PoikoSoft has a metatag editor.

Yeah, BRU is a great utility for renaming files.

Of course there are many, I've tried them all (mostly)

i'd strongly suggest Tagscanner over all offerings.
Actively updated, developer will reply directly via email and has implemented a suggestion of mine within the week of a next update - the ability to auto number tracks as well as their total tracks in the relevant tag field) That alone has sold me for life :)

This option will number the tag fields in which ever order they are presented - if the tag field has the track number and will be amended to the filename with the RENAME option and can be set to include any and all relevant info.

beside that the renaming abilities which is highly customisable via many preset script option or write your own. (if you dont know how, email the dev, he'll send you the exact line required) And the ability to auto generate all forms of text outputs, again fully customisable - what it can't do Bulk Rename covers - a perfect combo.

for eg, all track titles, numbers and artists are missing in their respective fields but the files title is something like:-

01-hortense_and_the_sound_dimension--people_make_the_world_go_round_version-9f0550cb.MP3
02-leroy_wallace_and_the_new_establishment--far_beyond_version-885e8ffc.MP3
03-sound_dimension--face_man_version-346f5bcb.MP3
04-fabian_x_the_vibes--mother_and_child_(part_2)-5db26c9f.MP3
05-lennie_hibbert--go_for_yourself-6c664b85.MP3
06-dub_specialist--chainey_roots-d537ea67.MP3
etc etc

bulk rename can remove all the junk so it appears as :-

01 - Hortense And The Sound Dimension - People Make The World Go Round Version.mp3
02 - Leroy Wallace And The New Establishment - Far Beyond Version.mp3
03 - Sound Dimension - Face Man Version.mp3
04 - Fabian X The Vibes - Mother And Child (Part 2).mp3
05 - Lennie Hibbert - Go For Yourself.mp3
06 - Dub Specialist - Chainey Roots.mp3
etc
but still the ID tag fields are empty - typing all the titles, artists and track numbers would waste 20-30 minutes (in this CDs case 17 tracks but consider a triple CD of 20 tracks per cd of a rip done 15+ years ago (heck its more than 20, damn age) when I was clueless and used itunes. [yeah I could re-rip 3000+ cd's again and near 2000 vinyl (and forget cassettes (I thoroughly distrust my 16TB & growing collection to a cloud service, and home NAS for my cherished music is the only way for me and not owning a tv my sanity relies on available music) :) anyway oddly no longer a "lazy teenager" i don't have 2 years spare nor the enthusiasm the introduction of ipods etc gave to rerpi the lot (unless I used 128kbps and VBR - early rip mistakes caused by small/expensive harddrives) and iTunes lol - now I use musicbee on pc, far superior.

Anyway typing all the fields would take near an hour! but with tagscanner's GENERATE option.....
I'd select the input field %title% & output field would be %track% - %artist% - %title% and at a click all 3 tag fields would be filled.

Of course I could use tagscanners option of simply getting the information direct from DISCOGS but often niche releases aren't listed and certainly not very recent releases.

Theres so much tagscanner can do and it's extremely powerful but without the "powerfully" difficult to navigate or cluttered UI all other PC ID tag apps suffer mp3TAG and the like.

oh and insta generating text files of the albums info to be saved with the tracks :-

alas the forum has messed up my beautifully straight tab alignments. :) I promise all the track names and times & ":" are in a perfectly straight line. ha

1 click, done - named as you want, fields as you chose and templates are provided for HTML, txt, RTF, pdf, CSV etc etc making it a breeze to create your own output template.

Now to get my commision from the tagscanner guy :)
ps sorry its long. the app saved me years of tag fixing, even if it's cost me months of doing it - but its music & likely sacred.
