Disable Extension Edit when renaming manually

Sorry in advance if it's already an easy or already answered question. I've searched the term extension in the forum and got nothing so, is there a way for a file's extension to not be a part of the file's name when editing it manually? I've both checked and unchecked the two settings listed in the renaming options section, but didn't have any effect.

I think he wants to hide filename extensions in the name column, similar to how you can do that in Windows Explorer.

Currently, when selecting the filename manually (F2), it highlights only the name portion of the filename and not the extension portion of it - but if you then manually select the filename, it is possible to select the extension and accidentally overwrite/erase it.
